Whole Fried Okras

I used to hate eating Okras with a passion. The sliminess made them very hard to eat. I hated it in my gumbo. I hated them sautéed. I just couldn’t stand eating them. Then one fine day, went to this BBQ joint and was coerced into trying Fried Okras. Let’s just say… I’m doing a recipe on it…


1 pack of fresh whole okras (uncut, washed, rinsed and pat dry thoroughly)
1 1/2 cup self rising flour
2 tbsp. pepper
2 tbsp. garlic powder
2 tbsp. onion powder
1 tbsp. five spice powder
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
2-3 tbsp. water
Peanut Oil for deep fry


Heat the fryer or frying pot on medium heat.

Egg Wash
In a medium size bowl whisks 2 eggs and water to make an egg wash.

Flour mixture
In a bowl, put together the flour, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, five spice. Stir evenly.

Put the Okras into the egg wash first to wet. Then dip it into the flour mixture and roll it around evenly. The egg wash help stick the flour to the okras to give it an even coat.


When the oil is nice and hot, drop the okras in and let it fry until golden brown.

Meanwhile, prepare your plate by placing paper towels on top. This will help soak up the grease. When Okras are at a nice golden brown, scoop them out onto the plate. Sprinkle some salt over while it’s still hot and serve immediately!
